About Us

About playcanasta.app

We publish a free, modern browser version of Canasta — the classic 108-card rummy-family game — played as a two-player match against the computer, with per-turn undo and a table that works on any screen.

Our craft

Two decks. One pile to win.

Draw, meld, freeze, take the pile, build the basket. That loop is everything we design around.

What we make

A free Canasta that stays in the browser

playcanasta.app is the site behind our version of Canasta. The product is a two-player card game: draw two cards or take the discard pile, meld sets of three or more cards of one rank, use wild 2s and Jokers to stretch them to seven-card canastas, and go out to end the hand. Play hand after hand until one side reaches 5,000 points.

Most online Canasta sites are built around multiplayer tables, accounts and memberships. We built the opposite: an opponent that is always ready, a game that needs no sign-up, and a table that loads as fast as a web page. There is nothing to download — the game is the website — and your progress lives in local browser storage.

This page speaks only for playcanasta.app. The rules, scoring and simplifications described in our how-to-play guide and FAQ match this exact build.

Our story

From Montevideo to your browser tab

Canasta is younger than most classic card games and became one of the most popular in a single decade. We treat that as a responsibility to get the rules right and the friction as close to zero as we can.

  1. 01

    Montevideo, 1939

Canasta was devised in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1939 as a two-deck, wild-card cousin of rummy. The name is Spanish for "basket", after the tray that held the cards; the seven-card meld that gives the game its name is the goal every hand is built around.

  2. 02

    A national craze

The game moved to Argentina and Brazil and then, in the late 1940s, to the United States, where it became a national craze in the early 1950s. Rulebooks, tournaments and dedicated card tables followed, and the game settled into the partnership form still played today.

  3. 03

    This build

playcanasta.app is an independent, modern implementation of standard Canasta, adapted to two players so you can play any time without waiting for a table. The rules are the familiar ones; what is new is a table that fits a phone screen, a computer opponent that follows the same rules, synthesized sound with a real mute, and an Undo for the current turn that no card table ever had.

Design

How the game is designed

  • A table you can read

Your hand, your melds, the computer’s melds, the stock and the discard pile are all on one screen, with the pile glowing gold when you are able to take it and a snowflake when it is frozen.

  • One way to act

Select cards, then press an action — or tap the stock, the pile or a meld directly. Buttons and keyboard shortcuts do the same thing, and every control is labelled for screen readers.

  • A fair opponent

The computer draws, melds and discards using the same legality checks the game applies to you. It has to reach the same first-meld minimum, cannot take a frozen pile without two naturals, and cannot go out without a canasta.

What we stand for

Principles behind every deal

Instant to start

Open the page, press Play, and a hand is dealt. No account wall, no download, no lobby to wait in — the cards are on the table before you finish reading this sentence.

Honest rules

Two decks and four Jokers, wild 2s, a frozen pile, first-meld minimums that rise with your score, natural and mixed canasta bonuses. The computer plays by exactly the same rules you do.

Yours to keep

Your match position, matches won, best hand and win streak live on your device. We do not hold your record behind a login, because there is no login.

Free, for real

The whole game is free. No coins, no energy meters, no interstitial video ads between hands, no paywall on private tables — because there are no tables to sell.

Who it is for

Players who want a real game of Canasta, right now

playcanasta.app is a family-friendly, single-player-versus-computer game with no chat and no store. It is a poor fit if you want live multiplayer, partnerships or tournaments; a good fit if you want the game itself, available on whatever screen is nearby.

  • Short and long sessions

A hand takes ten to twenty minutes; a match takes several hands. Your match score is saved between hands, so you can stop and continue later from the start of a hand.

  • Planning, not reflexes

There is no clock and nothing to react to. The challenge is remembering what has been discarded, deciding when the pile is worth taking and choosing when to go out.

  • Play without an account

Your record stays on the device you played on. That is a deliberate trade: instant play and real privacy, with no cloud restore.

How we build

Designed for the browser you already have

The game runs entirely on the web: fast loads, tap and keyboard controls, and progress that stays local unless you clear your browser data. We use lightweight analytics to see what helps players — never to gate the game behind a profile. The engine on the home page is the one described on our rules pages, so search results and the live game never drift apart.

  • Play anywhere

Phone, tablet, and desktop share one table. Tap or click to select, use the buttons or keyboard shortcuts for drawing, melding, discarding and undo.

  • Progress on your device

Match score, matches won, best hand, canastas built and streak are stored locally. You own the continuity of your record without signing up.

  • Quiet improvement

We watch aggregate usage through Google Analytics to improve pacing and polish. Details are in our Privacy Policy — never as a sales pitch.
